This is the music I like to hear when I wake up in the morning, next to a beautiful woman, which will happen one day, I'm sure... ;-) All songs are about (early) mornings, sleeping, waking up and the break of day. The one from Bryan Ferry is perhaps an exception. His song is about fearing the next morning: will she still love him? It's a remake of the classic from the Shirelles, but their song is more about respecting a woman after having sex and his version is about doubt or cheat in a relationship. Ferry uses the same words, but he turns the song (a composition from Gerry Goffin and Carole King) into something completely different. His version is my definition of a good cover: making it seem a composition of your own. Beautiful picture from Valeria Querini.

Mary J. Blige Feat. Drake – Mr. Wrong (2012)

From her latest album 'My life II: the journey continues (act 1)' and her new single. Mary sings: 'Bad boys ain't good, good boys ain't fun...' Her new album is a sequel to her 1994's 'My life', a true classic. This duet with Drake borrows a few words from 'Me and Mrs Jones', the well-known Philly song from Billy Paul, written by Leon Huff and Kenny Gamble.

Glen Campbell – These Days [B-Shakes Edit] (2008/2011)

Thanks to Bill Shakes and Matt Garlick for this edit of Glen Campbell's 2008 cover version of the Jackson Browne classic, originally performed by Nico in 1967. Glen sadly suffers from Alzheimer's disease nowadays and he just recently released his last album 'Ghost on the canvas', his farewell to the music business. In this song he sings: 'These days I think a lot of the things I forgot to do...' It's a beautiful piece of music. Glen Campbell is most famous for hits like 'Southern nights' and 'Rhinestone cowboy' in the 1970s.

Marvin Gaye – Ain’t That Peculiar [SoulP & Neil Thompson Summer Madness Mix] (2009)

The lyrics of this song are about a guy with a tormented soul: 'Every chance you get you seem to hurt me more and more/But each hurt makes my love stronger than before'. More about this wonderful combination of 'Ain't that peculiar' from Marvin Gaye and 'Summer madness' from Kool & the Gang on the Soulpersona blog.

Mystic Moods – The Morning After (1976)

The orginal was sung by Renee Arman in 1972. Maureen McGovern brought his song to a Billboard number one the same year. I chose for this suggestive instrumental cover.

Johnny Mathis – How Deep Is Your Love (1978)

Originally a classic from the Bee Gees and it was used for ‘Saturday Night Fever’. Johnny Mathis turns this pop song into a real soul gem! It’s from his ‘You Light Up My Life’ album.

Billy Paul – Let ‘Em In (1976)

Billy Paul had a worldwide hit with ‘Me And Mrs. Jones’ in 1973. This is a cover of a Paul McCartney song, but the lyrics have been changed. It’s now about the social struggles of the late sixties and early seventies. There are snippets of the famous Martin Luther King speech in it. There are two superb Billy Paul tracks on a new Philly compilation album called 'Philly Busters' that came out as the 24th volume of the Backbeats series.

Donna Washington – Save Your Love For Me (1980)

From her album ‘For The Sake Of Love’. She’s a great singer with a powerful voice. Later on she appeared on some gospel house tracks.

Lawrence Hilton Jacobs – Lock Me Up (1979)

I don't know much about this singer. It's a very good song though! It's from his 'All the way... love' album.

Lisa Danielle – You’re All I Need (1985)

I don’t know anything about this artist either. Her voice sounds a bit like the one of Deniece Williams. This song came out on the Sugarhill label which was led by the late Sylvia Robinson. The label was best known for the Sugar Hill Gang, of course. There's a guy on the track as well, but he's a complete mystery to me. Anyone who knows more?

The Jones Girls – Won’t Let It Take You Back (1984)

How I love those voices! This song came out on the famous Philadelphia International label, but they already had left the company by then. They never reached commercial success unfortunately.

Ronn Matlock – Feeling Something (1979)

This man sounds like the brother of Isaac Hayes (Chef from ‘South Park’ and known for his classic ‘Shaft’). Great baritone voice!

Silver Convention – San Francisco Hustle (1976)

This German based female vocal group is best remembered for their disco smash ‘Fly Robin Fly’. It reached the number one position on the American pop charts in 1975. They made a few really nice disco tunes, with some great string arrangements in it, like this one. The highest position of ‘San Francisco Hustle’ was number 8 on the Billboard disco charts.

Fat Larry’s Band – Act Like You Know [12”] (1982)

From their album ‘Breakin’ Out’ which includes their well-known ballad ‘Zoom’. This type of dance music from the early eighties is often called ‘club soul’ in stead of ‘disco’.

Soulpersona Feat. Freesia – Babylon [Exclusive Promo Version] (2011)

A very danceable track from the album 'The lapdancer' that came out last year.

Hodges James And Smith – Love Was Just A Word (1973)

A very nice soul song produced by Joe Sample from The Crusaders. It's from their album 'Incredible'.

Courtney Pine – Darwin's Dream Deferred (2011)

From his latest album 'Europa'. No one can play the saxophone better than he does!

Chic – Sao Paolo (1977)

A smooth instrumental track from Bernard Edwards en Nile Rodgers that closes the mix perfectly.

No Time For Dreaming

Last Saturday I woke up with the sounds of 'Together in electric dreams' from Phil Oakey (The Human League) and Giorgio Moroder (Donna Summer). A few minutes later I heard about the death of Etta James on the news. I thought I had to combine those two things and then the idea came about to make a mix about dreams and dreaming. We all know songs like ‘Dreaming’ from Blondie, 'Dreams' by Fleetwood Mac and ‘Sad sweet dreamer’ was a hit record for Sweet Sensation in 1974, but I tried to avoid the classics. Most of the songs in the second part are not only about dreaming, but they sound a little bit dreamy as well. That's after Charles Bradley shouts that there’s ‘no time for dreaming’. But his song seems a good message to make it the main theme of the mix… ;-) This mix also pays tribute to Etta James, the one and only queen of R&B. We're On The Philly Track

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Philadelphia International, the musical home of sophisticated soul producers and songwriters Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff who paved the way for disco, Harmless Records will release a few albums in a short period of time. First up is 'Philadelphia International: The Re-Edits' that will be out on January 16th. One of the edits is a wonderful 're-kutt' from Todd Terje that I also selected for this mix. Other standout tracks on the album are 'Strategy' from Archie Bell & the Drells [Touchsoul Re-Edit] and 'Let The Dollar Circulate' from Billy Paul [ScratchNSniff Extended Re-Rub].

I like the final result, but most of the edits on 'Philadelphia International: The Re-Edits' stay very close to the originals. Compilers Ian Dewhirst and Jay Negron (Jski) did a great job, but they probably could have taken a few more risks here and there. Or aren't they the ones to blame and did the copyright owners block the more extreme make-overs? For instance, the 'Tim MacAllister Re-Edit' of 'Be for real' from Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes adds quite a lot to the original version, but it's a pity that this edit is an exception on this project.

Besides some original Philly gems, I gathered a couple of edits that are not on the album for one reason or another. Check them out, they're certainly worth listening to, so let's enjoy this (almost) 90 minutes Philly ride! You can find my previous Philly cloudcasts right here. And tell me, do you like the idea of reworking the Philly classics or is does it feel a little bit like cursing in church? Is it some kind of blasphemy?

The Freak Of The Week

Best wishes to all of you! I have to admit that I borrowed the idea for my first one of the year from one of the best dj's on the planet, namely Tim Sweeney from NYC, but my mix is not as creepy as the one he created for 'Beats in space'. My 'Freak Of The Week' is more about doing freaky than being freaky, if you know what I mean. I tried to keep it funny rather than scary. It's a mix about being extraordinary. The only similarity is the song from Mud. Those guys made me love pop music way back when, so it's fair to be featured in this mix with their crazy classic as well. The song before Mud is from Don Bryant who was produced by the late Willie Mitchell on his legendary Hi label (Al Green, Ann Peebles).

A song that just missed the boat is 'Only a fool ' from Mighty Sparrow (together with Byron Lee). He sounds so sad and convincing. Why doesn't she love him? And keep an eye on King Charles, I love his new single 'Mississippi Isabel'. He's very funny! I can't wait for his album. Enjoy! Beautiful pictures from Courtney Brooke.

Power To The Pirates!

I close this year with a special 40 records tribute to the pirate radio stations on the Dutch and British coast in the 1960s and 1970s. To be honest, I enjoyed the pirate stations (mostly Radio Veronica and Radio Noordzee) for only one summer, the warm months of 1974, when the Dutch lost from the Germans in the World Cup soccer final. After that summer they were all banned and the pirate stations disappeared from the Dutch coast. But it was my introduction to pop music, so they made quite an impression to me.

This is also a tribute to the music that sounded so good on AM radio. Those songs from the early sixties to the mid-seventies were very powerful and catchy. They just blew out of my radio, like a piece of dynamite or like an explosion in my soul, to quote the Soul Survivors (who were produced by Philly soul legends Gamble & Huff). Although the movie ‘The boat that rocked’ (picture below) was not as good as I hoped it would be, it gives us a rather romantic impression of life on the pirate ships. For instance, the programmes of Radio Veronica were taped ashore and only broadcasted from the ship. None of the dj's were actually on board, although the listeners thought they were...

Everything I Do Gonna Be Funky Part 5

Let's funk around the Christmas tree! ;-) Funk saw the light of day in the mid sixties when James Brown recorded ‘Papa’s got a brand new bag’. At that time he had developed his signature groove that emphasized the first beat ('on the one'). This distinctive sound was picked up by others in the late sixties. Bands like Sly & the Family Stone, Funkadelic and The Meters took it to another level the next decade. It was a huge influence on disco music. Funk disappeared from the map in the mid-eighties. Then hip hop and later on house started to push it to the side. James Brown complains in ‘Rapp payback’: I know you heard of Master Gee / But you didn't hear nothing / About J.B.! ;-)

Probably the first funk song I heard on the radio was 'Fire' from The Ohio Players, although it was called disco at the time. It's still one of my all time favourites. Part 5 of Everything I do gonna be funky is a little bit different from the previous parts, because there's only one song with 'funk' in its title ('Breaking the funk'). Enjoy! One of the best movies of 2011 is without any hesitation 'Drive' starring a sensational Ryan Gosling as a getaway driver. The electronic music inspired me to compile this mix. One of the tracks, the dark one from Kavinsky, is in fact from the official soundtrack. You surely have to watch this intriguing movie that builds to a breath taking climax. The soundtrack is very impressive as well, altough the tracks are not as funky as the ones in this mix. Anyway, enjoy this funky electro mix! Boogie Land

The first track I had in mind for this mix was the one from Parlet. They are a P-Funk girl group, created by George Clinton. Debbie Wright, Mallia Franklin, and Jeannette Washington were the original members in 1978, the year they recorded their first album, ‘Pleasure principle’. George Clinton convinced Casablanca Records to put out lots of money to promote the record, but Debbie Wright had a bad drug reaction and was in no condition to tour. She had to drop out of Parlet. Shirley Hayden was brought in to replace her and they opened for P-Funk on tour for a while. Mallia Franklin left in 1979 to help form Sterling Silver Starship with then-husband and Parliament bassist Donnie Sterling. Janice Evans replaced Mallia halfway through the recording of their second album, ‘Invasion of the booty snatchers’ in 1979. A year later Parlet released one last album, ‘Play Me or Trade Me’. At that time George Clinton dropped his side-projects due to financial problems to purchase a solo career.

Two of my favourite videos of the moment are from Ford & Lopatin (they sound like a reincarnation of 80s sensation Scritti Politti) and Midnight Magic. Both bands are featured in this mix. There's a funky edit of a Suzi Quatro song in this new episode of Groovy, sexy & soulful. And Suzi Quatro was in fact the first woman I was in love with... ;-) She looked like one of the boys, with her tough leather suit and big bass guitar, but I found her incredibly sexy. She was originally from Motown city Detroit, but she was most popular in Great Britain, Europe and Australia in the 1970s. Well-known songs are 'Can The Can', '48 Crash' and 'Devil Gate Drive', all written and produced by famous glam hit makers Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman. The latter also worked on her latest album 'In the spotlight' that came out recently. It includes the single 'Whatever love is'. Suzi Quatro influenced girl bands like The Runaways and Joan Jett & the Blackhearts.

There are two songs in this mix from the great new Maysa album, 'Motions of love'. She has a single out, called 'Flower girl', which is a duet with Dwele. Enjoy part 6 of Groovy, sexy & soulful! The girl on the picture is beautiful soul singer Maya Azucena.

Groovy, Sexy And Soulful Part 5

Times have changed. Nowadays it would be totally inappropriate to sing about ‘little girls’, but in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s songs about teenage girls didn’t raise any eyebrows, even when the singers, like Ringo Starr and Chuck Berry, were in their (late) thirties. Being in love with school girls seemed to be quite normal. Alex Chilton (Big Star) sang on top of that about his love for a thirteen year old girl ('Thirteen') and Jerry Lee Lewis even married one! Bruce Springsteen sang about his little girl (‘I’m on fire’) in 1984 and Billy Idol claimed that he was in love with his ‘sweet sixteen’ three years later, but songs about teenage love were fading away in the 1980s. After the legal problems that R. Kelly and Gary Glitter faced in the 1990s and 2000s the openly teenage adorations seem to have disappeared for good in 2011, just like the word ‘teenager’ in songs. But that’s from the male perspective. Female vocalists like Katy Perry, on the other hand, still sing about ‘teenage dreams’.

Choirboy Aaron Neville almost sounds like a creepy maniac, but ‘Arianne’ from the Neville Brothers is one of the best love songs ever: ‘Arianne is mama's crystal bread that's nearly finished baking’. The song is from their self-titled album that came out in 1978 in the midst of the disco heyday. It takes courage to make a country soul album at that time! I believe the original version of ‘Arianne’ is from Johnny Mathis. It appeared on his ‘Killing me softly with her song’ album that was released in 1973, although Rod McKuen, who recorded the song in 1975, tells on his official site that the original is a French poem. The version of Rod McKuen is not available on cd yet, but it will appear on ‘McKuen: The Warner Bros. Years’ that will be released on Bear Family Records hopefully this year.

Ever since the 1980s I love to hear electro music and especially electro or synth funk. Kraftwerk started the revolution in the 1970s and bands like the Human League went on with the electro sound in the early 1980s. Then it started to infect soul and disco music as well, as you can hear in this mix. I included the Club Clique For The Bad Girls Remix of ‘Video games’ from the wonderful Lana Del Rey too. It fits perfectly as the first track.

Hello It's Me

There are lots of very cool songs about not being phoned, not picking up a phone or simply about the joy of a telephone call. Two years ago I did a telephone mix for Dazlingsoul, called ‘Tunes for your telephone’. Last year I compiled part 2 on Mixcloud. For 'Hello, it's me' I replaced some of the songs from the first part and changed the sequence. One of the new songs is a track from Mayer Hawthorne. It is from his very nice new album ‘How do you do’. Am I getting old or am I getting gay, but I like the new (quite soulful) Cliff Richard album (‘Soulicious’) too… ;-) Tell me, what are your favourite telephone songs?

On Tuesday morning I almost fell out of my bed when I heard the incredible ‘Video games’ from Lana Del Rey. I rushed to my computer to find more information about this singer. I started to like her even more when I saw her beautifully composed retro clips on You Tube. Her voice is a cocktail of Duffy, Amy Winehouse and a young Nancy Sinatra and her looks remind me of sixties icons like Brigitte Bardot. All my Facebook friends seemed to like her as well, although they complained about her lips and her bored look… ;-) At the moment she's in the studio working on songs with Damon Albarn (Blur) and good old Bobby Womack. Disco Extravaganza Feat. DJ Daizi

It’s time to do something special: I teamed up with the excellent DJ Daizi from Japan to play back to back. Daizi more or less invented the funky chill dj style and I have to admit that I am heavily influenced by it! We both like euphoric percussion on disco beats and some introvert funk to cool things down or to warm the place up, as in this set. Daddy's Theme

The reason for this mix is a sad one. Exactly one year ago friends and family said goodbye to my good old dad after being ill for quite some time. To honour him I thought it was a good idea to compile ‘Daddy’s theme’: songs about dads and sons, but not about my father in particular, although he was a cool daddy, to paraphrase Boney M.

Some of the songs seem to deal with fathers, but the lyrics are in fact about something completely different, like the songs from Jim Gilstrap and George Michael. But not the one from Feargal Sharkey, former frontman of the legendary Irish new wave band The Undertones. I remember my father didn’t like the lyrics of the song at all, because he only picked up the line ‘never listen to your father’. He misinterpreted the lyrics though, because I believe Feargal Sharkey sings that it’s only wise to listen to your father. That’s why I included the song as the final track. It strikes me that there are quite some men in my album archive singing about their dads and only a few women. Do they prefer to sing about their mothers? I think so.

The song from The Classics, 'Papa Peppone', is a bit of a guilty pleasure, I have to admit. I like the guitar sound of it, it sounds really cool. It reminds me of Duane Eddy and Hank B. Marvin of the Shadows.

Back From Rio

Yes, I’m back from my (imaginary) trip to Rio! ;-) . ‘Back from Rio’ is mixed in 115 BPM. The title is inspired by an album from Roger McGuinn, the singer of the legendary rock band The Byrds. Twenty years ago he made a very nice solo album that was called ‘Back fron Rio’, although there wasn’t any Latin song on it. I liked the title, so I used it for this mix. It’s meant to warm you up for the world championship soccer and the Olympic Games that will be held in Rio de Janeiro in a few years’ time. By the way, not all of the songs are South American, some of them have a Cuban background as well. Enjoy!

Dave Marsh wrote about ‘Juicy fruit’ from James Mtume (former percussionist of Miles Davis) in his excellent book ‘The heart of rock and soul’ (the 1001 greatest singles ever made): ‘Dirty records from the early days of R&B are more widely celebrated, but Hank Ballard never got any of his “Annie” records this far up the charts. Of course, he also didn’t come up with a riff half as exciting or danceable as the shattered-glass synth part here’. ‘Juicy fruit’ went to number 45 on the Billboard pop charts and reachend the number 1 spot on the R&B charts in 1983. Together with guitarist Reggie Lucas James Mtume wrote and produced quite a lot very good disco songs, like 'Don't stop dancin' for Stephanie Mills in 1979. It's on a new compilation album of Stephanie Mills, called 'Feel the Fire: The 20th Century Collection'.

The song 'My love won't let you down' from Nathalie was written and produced by Peter Godwin. In the 1970s he was one half of Metro (the other half was Duncan Browne). In 1977 they made a very interesting self-titled album, some kind of missing link between glam rock and new wave. After their split Peter Godwin came up with a few superb electro songs, like 'Images of heaven' and 'Emotional disguise'. Especially the French version of the latter is something special. You can also hear Nathalie (from Belgium) sing a few French words: 'Mon coeur qui craque'. Peter Godwin lived in Paris for a while, so he picked up some of the French culture and language for his music.

Whatever happened to Angel Grant? She made such a good record in the 1990s together with producers Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis (SOS Band, Janet Jackson and Alexander O’Neal), but disappeared after her self-titled debut album without leaving any trace until last year. She then came up with 'I wonder', an outstanding single. Hopefully she will deliver a new album as well. I included her beautiful song 'Deeper', but there are many more gems on her first album.

Summer Soul Station Part 14: Last Trip To The Seaside

The summer of 2011 is almost over, so it’s time to make one last trip to the seaside. The first trip was on AOR Disco, btw. I’m really proud to have included a track from Jeremy Spencer, an early member of Fleetwood Mac. He replaced guitarist Peter Green for a world tour, but after he had gone to a book store, he never returned… Five days later, police traced him to the headquarters of a Christian sect called the Children of God, which Spencer had apparently joined after being approached on the street. A few years later he began to record again and made ‘Flee’, one of the best soft rock albums of the 1970s.

Tropical storm Irene has left, so it’s safe to go to New York again! This mix is a tribute to the city where disco music was born, so there is quite a lot of disco in it. The final track, a re-edit from 'Miss Broadway', is from the new Horse Meat Disco III album, which is a joy to listen to, especially the part that is mixed by Luke Howard. The second song of my mix, ‘Manhattan’ from Laura Greene, is from the first Horse Meat Disco album, by the way. Enjoy this Summer Soul Station trip to New York City!

Summer Soul Station Part 12: Request Line

Summer Soul Station plays all your requests in this new mix! ;-) The first few words after the great new song from Fountains of Wayne are spoken by Iva Davies, singer and main member of the Australian band Icehouse. They have a great new compilation album out now, called ‘White heat’ that contains every single they released. The package delivers two audio discs, each with 15 songs in chronological order and a DVD with music videos from all of the singles. It's fun to see Iva Davies change from a shy guy with a pancake haircut to some kind of curly James Dean wih hair extensions. The album includes hits like ‘Great southern land’, ‘Hey little girl’, ‘Crazy’ and ‘Electric blue’. The latter was co-written by John Oates (Hall & Oates). Ten years ago German dj Mathias Schaffhäuser made a very nice rework of ‘Hey little girl’, together with Rob Taylor.

'Radio' is a song from the latest album from Raphael Saadiq (Lucy Pearl, Tony! Toni! Toné!). Thanks to Caroline, Claudia and Jacob, the very kind members of PME art, who played the album for me after their very original performance ‘the dj who gave too much information’at the Noorderzon Festival in Groningen. They tell brilliant stories about the vinyl tracks they play. For instance about the 'women only' concerts of Teddy Pendergrass and how Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards of Chic were refused at the door of Studio 54 for a Grace Jones party and shouted 'fuck off' afterwards at home. Those words changed into 'freat out' ('Le freak') later on. Check Caroline, Claudia and Jacob out on their tour! They will visit Great Britain and Sweden soon.

Last Monday Nick Ashford, one half of songwriting duo Ashford and Simpson, died. The two of them wrote for instance ‘Ain’t no mountain high enough’, ‘California soul’ and ‘Reach out and touch’. Nick and his wife Valerie had a worldwide hit with ‘Solid’ in 1984. As a tribute to Nick Ashford I made this remix, called ‘As a rock’.

Summer Soul Station goes Motown! In the past I remixed a couple of Marvin Gaye songs. ‘Inner city blues’ is my most recent one. I used bits and pieces of German band leader James Last. He gave the song the summer feeling I needed for this mixtape. The track from Kelly Rowland is from her new album ‘Here I am’, her first one on Motown. She sings about Summer Soul Station, I suppose: ‘We gotta do it, do it all day, like the radio!’ She promoted her album with a wardrobe malfunction last week…

I will play the original version of ‘Walk away Renee’ someday as well, because the Four Tops did a cover version of it. Enjoy this summer of Motown!

Summer Soul Station Part 10: Blue Eyed Soul

Summer Soul Station is still on the road! I love those radio friendly and most of all car friendly songs I grew up with in the seventies and eighties. I lived in a small village back then, so the radio was the only source to hear new music. I listened a lot to common names like Toto, Steely Dan, Roxy Music and Boz Scaggs who made really enjoyable blue eyed soul. Or perhaps it’s better to call it (soft) rock with disco and soul influences. Pale British singer James Blunt is one of the latest artists in that tradition. By the way, glam rock star David Bowie was the first white guy to perform on the American television show Soul Train (in 1975). Luther Vandross used to be one of his background singers. This mixtape is a tribute to that disco/rock sound. It pays homage to the Volkswagen Beetle as well, a car my father used to drive. And no, it’s not my mother blowing bubbles in front of the colourful car on the picture… ;-)

I included an edit of a classic from Andrew Gold. He passed away two months ago. His contributions to pop music were always wonderful. Front man Dan Peek of folk rock band America left us last month (I put in a Todd Terje edit of 'Horse with no name'). Singer Les Gray of British quartet Mud died of a heart attack seven years ago, but it was his voice, his energy, his charisma and his enthusiasm that introduced me to pop music back in 1974. Guitarist Rob Davis of the band became a dance producer later on and wrote ‘Can’t get you out of my head’ for Kylie Minogue. Drummer Dave Mount tragically took his own life in 2006. Bass player Ray Stiles is a member of The Hollies nowadays. Mud recorded 'Drift away' in 1978, but it was originally sung by John Henry Kurtz on his album 'Reunion' in 1972. The soul version that Dobie Gray (no family of singer Les Gray) made of it a year later, is the most popular one. By the way, Michael Omartian, key member of Rhythm Heritage ('Caravan') and producer of Christopher Cross, played piano on 'Reunion' from John Henry Kurtz.

Summer Soul Station Part 9: The Rhythm Of The Jungle

After taking a plane last week, Summer Soul Station is enjoying the exotic sounds and wild rhythms of the jungle now. One of the tracks is the story of ‘Mushanga’, a hit song from Toto in 1988. It’s about an American magazine writer who is a poet as well. In the far away jungle he falls in love with a ‘girl with no shoes’, but when he returns to New York City, she never replies to his letters. It seems that the postman can’t find her palm tree or so… The song ends with the line that he hopes that she will find all the things she was after, but his heart is still with her. I like that thought. It’s a story that is similar to the one of Pocahontas. A tale that is told many times, for instance in the movie ‘The New World’, starring Colin Farrell. He’s a great actor, but I liked him much better in his latest one, ‘Horrible Bosses’, which is hilarious, especially when he does his Kung-Fu tricks while listening to 'Kung Fu Fighting', the Carl Douglas classic. Summer Soul Station Part 8: Take Off!

Two weeks ago we took a boat trip, now it is time to take the Summer Soul Station airplane! To be honest, I have a little fear of flying, just like former Dutch soccer player Dennis Bergkamp. Comedienne Kirstin Wiig shows us to what this fear might lead to in the funny movie Bridesmaids. But to overcome the fear, I have selected quite a few happy and joyful songs about taking a plane, although there are some dark tracks in it as well (from Albert Hammond and The Motors). I chose Art Garfunkel after hearing the track on one of the superb ‘Ready 4 Airplay’ podcasts from Flashlite Productions. Great song it is! And doesn’t Goldfrapp sound a tiny little bit like Donna Summer’s ‘I feel love’? Judge for yourself! One of the biggest fans of Donna Summer were The Human League. 'Sky' is their very cool new single! It's time to take off now... Ladies and gentlemen, Captain Eddy hopes you all have a pleasant flight!

This is a downtempo/funky chill mix for the early hours to sunrise, when you’re waiting for sleep to come with Summer Soul Station on, your favourite radio station, of course… ;-) These are soft tunes to make you feel comfortable, when you’re alone in your bed and music is your only company. ‘Don’t you forget about me’ from the movie ‘The breakfast club’ was first offered to Bryan Ferry in the 1980s, but he refused. He still regrets his refusal to this day, because it was his chance to have a breakthrough hit in the US. Billy Idol didn’t want to record the song either. Finally the Simple Minds accepted the track and it’s their bestselling song until this day… The version I included is from the album 'Hollywood, mon amour', a project from Marc Collin (Nouvelle Vague). The new Washed Out album lacks good songs, but I like the Lovelock remix of their new single ‘Eyes be closed’. Enjoy these songs that accompany sunrise! Pictures from Valeria Querini.

Welcome to the Summer Soul Station yacht! And one of the best places to sail to is the southern part of France, of course. Canadian singer Zwol discovers an interesting thing there. According to him ‘the ladies wear no pants’ at that particular part. Listen to the lyrics and you know what I mean… ;-) I like 'Stop still' from Dutch guy Allan Jeffers that I play in this mix. It went to #24 in the Dutch charts in 1978. The original is from the Chi-Lites, as Nicolas Drosos told me. The cover version from Allan Jeffers was produced by Martin Duiser. He would work with Sting, Andrea Bocelli, Joe Cocker, Gary Brooker, Toto, Simple Minds and Alan Parsons later on in his career.

'Rise' from Herb Alpert is a great disco track! He made a jazz album together with his wife Lani Hall not long ago.

The Breakaway track is from my favourite compilation album of the moment, ‘Americana Rock Your Soul’. Check it out, if you can!

This is part 5 of Summer Soul Station. The first track of this mix, ‘I’ll look around’ from Esperanza Spalding, is from a brand new Billie Holiday tribute on StormVox that came out this week. ‘The bottle’ is another cover version. It was written by soul innovator and spoken word artist Gil Scott-Heron, who passed away on the 27th of May. I included a version of Maysa Leak, one of the singers of Incognito. She gives the song an up-tempo, more optimistic feel. And I always like Señor Coconut, his music gives me the perfect summer feeling. You have to check out his song about the Tour de France (the world's biggest cycling event that is taking place now). It is a Latin version of the Kraftwerk classic. I put in a track from Brazilian jazz funk band Azymuth, teaming up with Jazzanova this time. I will play a track from the new Azymuth album ‘Aurora’ very soon. Enjoy! Picture from Calvin Dexter.

Here is another episode of Summer Soul Station, the radio station that sounds best in your (fictitious) car on your way to the beach! ;-) I only recently discovered the album ‘Calling all hearts’ from Keyshia Cole (shame on me…) but it is so good! She has a very powerful voice and the lyrics of the songs are always clever. I played a track from her album a few weeks ago and there’s another one today. I like the new Musiq Soulchild album, called ‘Musiqinthemagiq’, and ‘befriends’ is about not being each other’s friends, when passion is involved between man and woman. The track from Tender Leaf can be found on ‘Americana Rock Your Soul’, a very cool new soft rock compilation that is out now. ‘Zoom’ from FLB is included for Swazification. So let’s ease down the road with ‘just a friend', to quote Biz Markie and Booker T. Jones! The song isn't on the new album from Booker T. Jones, which is a pity, because it's very funny.

Summer Soul Station Part 3: Clean Sounds

I grew up in the 1970s, so I have a very weak spot for the clean radio sound of that era. The thing is that you can get fed up with it very quickly, so I threw in the best soulful and melodic tracks I could find. One hour of ‘afternoon delight’, to quote Starland Vocal Band. Imagine yourself driving a Ford Mustang through L.A. with the radio on Summer Soul Station. The couple on the picture are Daniel Craig and female rapper Eve in the beautiful movie ‘Flashbacks of a fool’. So let’s enjoy the happy-go-lucky sounds of the seventies with a little bit of legendary dj Wolfman Jack in it as well. He plays himself in ‘Hit the road Jack’ from Canadian rockers The Stampeders.

The other guy singing on the Steve Harley track is blue eyed soul singer Michael McDonald. Harley is best known for his 1975 UK number 1 ‘Make me smile’ (‘Come up and see me’). In the late 1970s he moved to Los Angeles. He tried to crack the US market, but it didn’t work out the way he had planned, although he made a pretty good album there with quite a few big names, like Marc Bolan (T-Rex) and Bobby Kimball (Toto). He created a sort of laid back Steely Dan sound. ‘Hobo with a grin’ was re-issued on cd earlier this year. After the failure of the album, Steve Harley went back to England. In the 1980s he became a musical star and was the first one to play the phantom next to Sarah Brightman in ‘The phantom of the opera’. His album ‘Stranger comes to town’ came out last year.

Paul Anka looks like a plastic old guy with too much bling and too much tan nowadays, but he made quite a few good songs in the 1970s, after his success as a teen idol in the late 1950s and early 1960s, making it big with ‘Diana’. ‘Flashback’ was never on any album and was released as a b-side of ‘Let me get to know you’ in the US. Luckily 'Flashback' was a (minor) hit in the Netherlands. That’s why national radio dj Rob Stenders got hold of it and put it in his Freak 10.000, as one of the best songs of all time.

There’s a very nice compilation with unknown soft rock/blue eyed soul tracks out on BBE records, called ‘Americana Rock Your Soul’. I will play a track from it next week. Enjoy part 3 of ‘Summer Soul Station’!

I love those radio friendly and most of all beach friendly songs I heard on the radio when I was on holiday in my teenage years. This is a tribute to that joyful sound! It’s my intention to present a new theme broadcast from summer soul station frequently the coming weeks. It’s some kind of experiment. I hope you will like it… The theme of this mix is ’happy radio’. Another Tom Moulton Mix

While mixing ‘Dr Love’ Tom Moulton suffered from a heart attack, but he waited more than four hours to go to hospital, because he wanted to finish the track first. The doctor he spoke was not exactly Dr Love, because he was really pissed that Tom hadn’t come any earlier. So it could have been his final mix… Some of the songs borrowed a bit from the Motown sound, like the one from The Independents. Brothers Al and Don Downing sound how The Four Tops would have sounded if they had made a disco record. Although the song is great, I always hear the same kind of flute in the Al Downing track as the one in one of the worst tracks of all time, ‘Una paloma blanca’ from George Baker Selection…

Feeling The Magic Of Vintage Soul

Here are some very nice vintage soul songs and a few recent edits of soul classics. One of the best songs I heard recently is from Troy. His ‘And tomorrow means another day we’re apart’ is included on ‘The spirit of Philadelphia 3’ and was also on a compilation called ‘Lost soul gems’. His voice sounds like Aaron Neville in the beginning of the song, but when he reaches his climax you would swear it was Marvin Junior (the Dells) or Teddy Pendergrass. It is a superb track. I did some research on Troy, because compiler Ralph Tee of ‘The spirit of Philadelphia 3’ didn't know who he was. Well, Troy turns out to be Benny Mardones, a songwriter that made a name for himself as a rock singer in the eighties. He is known for songs like ‘Into the night’ (covered by Usher last year) and ‘She’s so French’. Read his biography for more details about his impressive career.

Benny Mardones looks and sounds like David Coverdale (Whitesnake) nowadays, so it is hard to believe that he recorded the beautiful and soulful ‘And tomorrow means another day we’re apart’ 40 years ago. The song was produced by one of the big names behind the sound of Philadelphia, Bobby Martin. Another big name of the Philadelphia sound is Tom Moulton. He remixed ‘Rising cost of love’ from Loose Change for his brand new remix album, ‘Philly Re-Grooved 2: The Master Returns’ that came out on Monday. Next week there will be another Tom Moulton mix.

Troy is not the only blue-eyed soul singer I included. I also selected the brilliant ‘Kiss on my list’ from Philadelphian singers Daryl Hall and John Oates, a Billboard Hot 100 #1 in 1981. Enjoy!

Let's Sing The Rain Out Of The Sky

In the Netherlands it has never been as dry in springtime as this year, which is a disaster for farmers. Just like my grandfather who was a farmer, I like some heavy rain after a sunny day! Rain, rainbows and the lack of sunshine are the themes of these soul songs. Some are classics, others are relatively unknown. A rare one is the song from Marv Johnson. He recorded the first single on Tamla from Berry Gordy, called 'Come to me', in 1959. He had some success in the early 60s and stopped recording for Motown in 1968, but continued working for them in sales. He recorded ‘Save my love for a rainy day’ (a big Northern Soul tune for The Van Dykes later on and also recorded by Undisputed Truth) in October 1967. For some mysterious reasons it stayed on the shelves until 2002 when it was included on ‘A cellarful of Motown’. In 1993 Marv Johnson died of a stroke at the age of only 54.

‘Ain’t no sunshine’ is performed by the Emotions ('Boogie wonderland', 'Best of my love') in this mix, but it was written by Bill Withers, of course. Tonight there will be a Bill Withers tribute with the man himself as a special guest at the Carré in Amsterdam.

Check out the new album from the beautiful Canadian soul singer Marie-Christine (picture), called ‘Walk in beauty’ that officially came out a few days ago. It contains nice reworks of ‘Sunglasses at night’ (originally from her producer Corey Hart), ‘Tempted’ (Squeeze) and ‘I wanna be your lover’ (Prince). Her rainy contribute is her self-penned ‘A little grey on a sunny day’, which is really nice. Enjoy this track from her debut album and all the other songs that hopefully bring us some rain!

Will I ever get over disco? Again some tracks from the disco era and beyond. There’s a brilliant ‘best of Scritti Politti’ out now (without my ‘Absolute’ edit that is…), called ‘Absolute’ with their biggest hits, but without any tracks of their latest album ‘White bread, black beer’, which is a pity. Listen to founder and main man Green Gartside of Scritti Politti about his panic attacks and his mental breakdown on Mixcloud. ‘Gonna get along without you’ was a disco hit by Viola Wills in 1979, but it was originally sung by Teresa Brewer in 1952. Happy Birthday To Burt Bacharach!

This is a soulful tribute to Burt Bacharah. The guy celebrated his 83rd (!) birthday on the 12th of May. His melodies and arrangements are always wonderful. The poetic and sometimes very deep lyrics of Hal David and Carol Bayer Sager (his ex-wife) make the picture complete. Bacharach and David delivered probably their best work with Dionne Warwick, but there are many artists that have made beautiful interpretations of Burt's classics. This mixtape is a proof for that. Celebrate with him and enjoy his magic sounds with those incredible trumpets.

My tribute starts with the original version of 'Always something there to remind me'. It was covered by Sandie Shaw and a few years later by Dionne Warwick. There's an interesting new wave/electro version of it by Naked Eyes (led by Rob Fischer who became one half of Climie Fisher later on). 'Arthur's theme' has been recently covered by Fitz and the Tantrums for the remake of the movie 'Arthur'. And Boyzone frontman Ronan Keating gives us his interpretation of the song on his new album 'When Ronan met Burt'. It's a nice one as well, especially when he's backed by an all female orchestra on YouTube. Don't forget to listen to the last track of the mix, 'Alfie' by Rumer. It's from the Dutch version of her lovely album 'Seasons of my soul', which includes her outstanding new single 'Goodbye girl'. She seems to be some kind of reincarnation of Karen Carpenter. Hopelfully she enjoys life more than Karen did... Although I'm two days late, happy birthday to you, Burt!

The song that marked the beginning of the disco era is most of all ‘Rock your baby’ from George McCrae. Written by the guys from KC & the Sunshine for George’s wife Gwen, but she couldn’t come over to the studio in time. So they passed it over to husband George and the rest is history. The song became a number one smash all over the world. Jesse Green borrowed a little bit of the rhythm from George for his smooth sounding ‘Nice And Slow’ (and the sexy dancer makes the song a joy to watch on YouTube!). Roundtree was mixed by Tony Bongiovi. Doesn’t that name sound familiar? Yes, he’s the uncle of rock singer Jon Bon Jovi! And yes, I put in the Jazmine Sullivan song after seeing the movie ‘The King’s Speech’... ;-) Ntjam Rosie was a guest on the Gilles Peterson show on BBC Radio 1 last Wednesday. A Tom Moulton Mix

All the songs in this 'Tom Moulton mix' were mixed by the guy who changed the musical landscape in the early seventies when he discovered that all singles were meant to be played on the radio and weren’t made for clubs. Former male model Tom Moulton invented ways to stretch songs to make them flow from one to another, so people could dance on them continuously. He's one of the most important and innovative pioneers in mixing tracks, although he was not always credited for his work. He reworked for instance ‘Do it anyway you wanna’ from People’s Choice to the hit version we all know, but his name didn’t appear on the record.

Moulton became most famous for mixing songs for labels such as Philadelphia International and Salsoul, but he remixed hundreds of (underground) disco singles in the seventies and early eighties. He also laid his hands on some legendary Motown tracks, but that isn't his best work. Those Motown classics sound better when they are short, that's their strength. In the recent past he remixed tracks for Seductive Souls ('Dazz'), Cool Million ('the Tom Moulton session') and Kings go Forth ('Don't take my shadow').

Probably my favourite track of this Tom Moulton tribute is the one from George Tindley (who is he?). I love that infectious African beat (like 'In Zaire' from Johnny Wakelin) and although the choir sounds a bit like Les Humphries Singers, I love the way they sing 'Young and in love!' When I heard the beautiful track ‘Simple song (for a complicated girl)’ by the French band 1973, I was sure I wanted to do another part of ‘The French Way’. So I searched for a couple of songs that all have a French connection. And there is room for Dimitri From Paris of course, the man who made disco fashionable in the 1990s, when no one listened to it anymore… There’s a new mix album that he did together with Bob Sinclar on Defected called ‘The knights of the Playboy Mansion’. Check it out, it’s good! Et oui, even Lady Gaga sings a few French words in her ‘Bad romance’, but it is not included in this mix.

Nouvelle Vague has made a very good version of the Soft Cell classic ‘Say hello and wave goodbye’. Frontman Marc Almond did his best on quite a few Jacques Brel songs, but Scott Walker sings Brel like no other can. You can hear him at the end of the mix.

Can you guess what groove this is? It’s definitely 'music that you can dance to'! The song from Sparks is perhaps their best song ever. It has some Giorgio Moroder influenced beats and synthesizer lines, but the brothers Ron and Russel Mael throw in some jazzy horns as well, which makes it an unique piece of work. Enjoy this soul and disco mix with a few Balearic and funky chill beats as well! Maybe you can tell what kind of groove it was afterwards... ;-)

By the way, the song from the Human League is a remix of their latest single that came out last week. Dimitri From Paris played the Aeroplane remix of 'Never let me go' in his BBC Essential mix. Here’s part 3 of the Everything I Do Gonna Be Funky series. Again all the tracks have 'funk' or 'funky' in their titles. Most of the tracks are from the heyday of funk (early to late seventies). But funk became popular again in a different shape in the late eighties when hip hop borrowed their beats and attitude, and still is popular, actually. Enjoy!

Listening to ‘Mission bell’, the very cool new Amos Lee album (he sounds like a young Bill Withers!) on the legendary Blue Note label, I thought it became time again to make a new Blue Note mixtape. The Jack Costanzo mix was done by me and it contains 'La Cumparsa', 'Harlem nocturne' and 'Peter Gunn Mambo' (the Henry Mancini classic). And doesn't a contemporary artist like Señor Coconut sound very similar to Costanzo with the same funny approach? Enjoy!

The idea behind this mix was to put some very cool funky and soulful tracks together, old and new. Last week I put a Philly mix up and in this mix are two songs from Philadelphia. The first one is from Vincent Montana Jr. under his moniker Sounds of Inner City and recorded in the legendary Sigma Sound Studios. And I think it’s MFSB, the Gamble & Huff house orchestra that is playing on the Skip Mahony track, but I’m not sure. And if they’re not, the musicians can imitate the sound very well! The Pat Les Stache track is an edit, originally done by Adriano Celantano. I recognize his voice, anyway. The guy on the picture is The Temptations' falsetto singer Eddie Kendricks. Six months ago I did a mix called ‘Philly re:grooves’ which was well listened to on Mixcloud. So it’s time to do something similar. Again a handful of songs from the archives of the legendary Philly sound, created by Kenny Gamble (right) and Leon Huff. It was once referred to as 'soul music in a tuxedo'. A couple of weeks ago Alwin, a good friend of mine, asked me to go to a concert of The Sonnets. I never had heard any songs of them, so I searched for the band on YouTube. And I discovered a very nice single with a sample from Barry White’s ‘Love’s theme’, called ‘No Hollywood ending’. The concert was cancelled (one of the members was ill), so I haven’t seen them live yet, but I like their fresh eighties attitude. Check them out, if you can. Their album ‘Western Harbour Blue’ is very nice as well.

Dance & Be Happy

It’s a good motto for this weekend: dance and be happy! It's also the title of a song from the ‘Love man’ sessions from Marvin Gaye. Due to his difficulties with Motown the song never officially made it to an album, which is a pity. It has the same quality as the songs from his creative peak in the early and mid-1970s. Some of the songs appeared (in different versions) on 'In our lifetime' in 1981.

In this mix I used a re-edit I made, ‘Move for me’ from Output. I left out a horrible rap and put in some extra instruments and vocals. It sounds a little bit Chic-ish now. Output was a project from Jerome Prister. Later on he was part of Secret Weapon (known for 'Must be the music').

A female vocalist that has a very nice ‘seventies vibe’ is Ntjam Rosie. Check her latest album ‘Elle’ which is really nice!

Disco Diehards

It’s disco time again! And some of the best disco comes from Germany, like the one in this mix from Su Kramer. The guy on drums is Keith Forsey. He played on records from Giorgio Moroder, Donna Summer and Sparks. Later on he produced the big hits for former punk rocker Billy Idol, like ‘Eyes without a face’. The song ‘Magic dance’ heavily borrows from ‘Was dog a doughnut’, the club classic from Cat Stevens. Sampling didn’t exist yet... A few years later the electro experiment from Cat Stevens was sampled by The Fearless Four ('It's magic' in 1982). Deichkind sampled 'Magic dance' for their hip hop track 'Bon voyage' in 2000.

The remixed version of ‘My house’ from Hercules & Love Affair came out last week. It uses a few beats from ‘Let’s start II dance again’, the Bohannon disco track (with additional raps from Dr. Perri Johnson and some very cool breaks!). It was one of the first rap tracks on the Dutch pop charts. Hamilton Bohannon was the bandleader for several Motown tours in the late sixties and early seventies. Marvin Gaye mentions his name on his very funky track ‘Checking out’. When Motown moved to Los Angeles in 1972, Hamilton Bohannon started a career of his own. I’m a big fan of his tight way of drumming ever since I heard ‘Disco stomp’ when I was a kid.

And don’t forget to listen to the last song, the very nice rework of ‘Give me the night’, the George Benson/Quincy Jones/Rod Temperton classic, sung by actor/singer Jamie Foxx who played Ray Charles very well in the movie ‘Ray’. It's from the album 'Q Bossa Nostra'. You only have to skip the Amy Winehouse track. She gives a very poor performance of 'It's my party', the Lesley Gore song that was produced by Quincy Jones almost 50 years ago. And did you know that British new wave band New Order (formerly known as Joy Division) worked with master Q on their 1988 remix of 'Blue Monday'? I included 'True faith' that went to #32 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1987.

It’s really a coincidence, but two of the tracks in this mix were played by DJ Dazler on his show last week. The same taste in music, I guess… ;-)

To be honest, the album ‘Destiny fulfilled’ from Destiny’s Child was quite dreadful. The track ‘Cater2you’ had the worst lyrics since ‘Stand by your man’… But I like ‘Is she the reason’, which is exceptionally good. They sample Melba Moore’s ‘I don’t know no one to turn to’ and their song is way better than the original (yes, it’s true!). The Human League song was produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis (Janet Jackson, SOS Band). Watch out for their super cool new single 'Never let me go' that will be out soon! The lyrics are wonderful: 'a life alone is not a crying shame'.

There’s a little bit of ‘body talk’ in this video as well (and don't forget to listen to ‘Shake it’ from Steffen Morrison!). Enjoy!

Did you survive Blue Monday and the cold, dark days of January so far? Here’s part 2 of Pais Tropical to cheer things up a little bit! I always thought that Santa Esmeralda was a Spanish guy, with a guitar in a box like Antonio Banderas in the movie ‘Desperado’. But it turns out to be a French team of producers with no Spanish blood in their veins at all. I like their single though. Director Quentin Tarantino used ‘Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood’ for his movie Kill Bill 1. Leroy Gomez is the singer of the track. He used to have some problems with his zipper which can be seen in a few YouTube videos… Gomez is a born American and worked as a session saxophone player and vocalist, with many artists, including Elton John, José Felicano, Patrick Juvet, Gilbert Becaud, Claude Francois and Laurent Voulzy. Enjoy!

The album track 'Too hurt to dance' from Duffy really hit me when I heard it the first time. That's why I put it up as the theme song of this mix. And there are more very good tracks on her latest album. Despite what the critics say, I think it's just as good as her first one. The songs are co-written by Albert Hammond. He’s known for classics like ‘The air that I breathe’ (a hit for The Hollies), I don’t wanna die in an air disaster’, ‘It never rains in southern California’ and many more. And the album was co-produced by Stuart Price (Les Rythmes Digitales) who worked with Madonna, Scissor Sisters, Brandon Flowers (The Killers) and remixed Lady Gaga songs recently. And the backing band are no others than the Roots. Enjoy!

While working on this mix I read on Twitter that Teena Marie (real name: Christine Brockert) had passed away. With a little help from (intimate) Motown friend Rick James she was a real R&B sensation 30 years ago. She sounded like a raw diamond: straightforward, energetic and dynamic. In 1982 she left Motown after a legal dispute. The outcome became known as ‘The Brockert Initiative’, which makes it illegal for a record company to keep an artist under contract without releasing new material for that artist. Six years later she had her first and only number one hit on the American R&B charts, ‘Ooo la la la’. When the decade came to an end with the house and hip hop revolution taking place, she struggled to move on in her career. In 1995 The Fugees borrowed her ‘Ooo la la la’ for their breakthrough single ‘Fu-Gee-La’. Teena kept on making records and performing on a lower scale. Her latest album ‘Congo square’ was released on Stax in 2009. My tribute to her in this mix is ‘Why can’t I get next to you’ from her album ‘Lady T.’, one of her best. Last, but not least, best wishes to all visitors of my blog!

A little bit of this and a little bit of that, but always in a funky, relaxed mood, that’s what funky chill basically is. I’m glad to put a track in from the latest album by Bryan Ferry. Just like soul singer Maxwell, I’m a huge fan of his work, especially of his output from the late seventies to the mid-eighties. His new album ‘Olympia’ refers to his best period and again Nile Rodgers (Chic) plays guitar. Have a listen, if you can. Speaking of good albums, thanks to DJ Dazler for sending me a copy of ‘Lost in time’ from Eric Benét. His tribute to seventies soul is probably the best album of 2010. Funky Guys From Germany

A couple of months ago I put the spotlight on France, now it’s time to hear some very cool German songs. The title of the mix refers to Afrika Bambataa who once called Kraftwerk ‘those funky guys from Germany', but he could have said 'those funny guys from Germany', because I like their humour in their songs. I believe I once read that the last track of the mix, ‘I'm In Love With A German Film Star’ from the Passions, is about the crazy German actor Klaus Kinski. He's shown on the picture above which is from the excellent movie 'Fitzcarraldo', that was directed by Werner Herzog (who also directed 'Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans', the best movie of 2010). Klaus Kinski is the father of beautiful actress Nastassja Kinski (ex-wife of Quincy Jones).

One of the best German songs ever is ‘Theo, Wir Fahr’n Nach Lodz’ from Vicky Leandros. She was the winner of the Eurovision Song Contest in 1972, taking part with 'Après Toi' for Luxemburg. I haven’t the faintest idea what ‘Theo, Wir Fahr’n Nach Lodz’ is about (something about going to Poland?), but the beginning is so good with the shouting, hand clapping and shattering glass. And when the song is coming to and end, Vicky seems to leave on horseback with a trumpet player on her side!

American born Donna Summer started as a professional singer in Germany as shown in a classic Dutch tv-performance from 1974 when she greets the stumbling host with ‘Guten Tag’. When she became very successful in her home country, she went back and launched the career of her producer, synthesizer genius Giorgio Moroder as well. Donna herself was called the queen of disco from the mid to the late 1970s. Her success slowly went down in the 1980s. Nowadays she is still in the business and she is occasionally making records too. One of the bands that were heavily influenced by Donna and Giorgio were the Human League (picture), led by Colin Farrell look-alike Phil Oakey. Last month they released a very cool new single, called 'Night People'. The Villa remix is free for download on their official site. Don't forget to watch their very nice new video. Their new album 'Credo' (their first since 2001!) will be out in March 2011. That is surely something to look forward to!

Amanda Lear began as a fashion model in the mid-1960s and was also the muse of Spanish surrealist painter Salvador Dalí. In the early 1970s she dated David Bowie and Roxy Music singer Bryan Ferry. Being the girlfriend of Ferry she was pictured on the cover of Roxy Music's album ‘For Your Pleasure’ in 1973. By the end of the decade, when she was already in her late thirties, she became a disco diva, mainly on the European continent with smashes such as ‘Queen of Chinatown’, ‘Follow Me’, ‘Enigma (Give a Bit of Mmh to Me)’ and ‘Fashion Pack’. She has sold 15 million albums and over 25 million singles worldwide.

Groovy, Sexy & Soulful Part 2

Just like a few months ago a couple of groovy, sexy and soulful songs! One of the best songs of the seventies is ‘Dancing in the city’ by Marshall & Hain. It’s pop, disco, soul and a piece of jazz in one brilliant song! Have a listen and take a look at the marvelous Kit Hain. She looks so cool in this Dutch session for Toppop (and not wearing a bra was very fashionable at the time…)

Tom Moulton was one of the first to remix disco tracks. I listened to a lot of his classic remixes from the seventies up till now. He normally starts with a long instrumental intro with a few harmony vocals (sometimes he adds a break), in the middle are the vocal parts and he usually ends with a full orchestra playing (with one solo instrument). Dimitri from Paris does more or less the same on his Philly remixes. I tried to copy this trick on 'Guilty' from First Choice. DJ Dazler played the track on his Dazling Soul Show some time ago. Speaking of the show, I will host it next Saturday at midnight CET (6 PM local New York time) on Disco 935. And around the 15th next month, I will do a guest mix on For Disco Play Only. Pais Tropical - Latin Spirit

Latin music gives me the same happy feeling as disco. I like the way the musicians don’t seem to take things seriously, although they play their parts more than excellent. The ecstatic percussion players give me the perfect dance floor feeling. And most of all I like the seductive female vocals, for example those of Annakelly (from ‘Stones and bossa’). I don’t like the Rolling Stones that much, but Annakelly turns their compositions into something really nice! Enjoy 'Pais Tropical'!

Disco Knockouts!

Two songs inspired me to make this mix. One of them is a recent track from Duck Sauce. The repetition of the female vocals reminded me of Stars On 45. The other one is from Dutch singer Dee Dee. I heard ‘I put a spell on you’ on a recent episode of Tim Sweeney’s ‘Beats in space’. In this You Tube video she looks a little bit like a sex doll, but I love the song! I like the closing track from soul veterans the Drifters, but isn’t it strange to hear guys who were in their thirties at the time sing about schoolgirls? Different times, I guess, when no one had heard of R. Kelly yet...

One of my personal favourites is ‘Night time’ from Maggie MacNeal. I bought the 7” which was produced by Michael Lloyd (known for his work for the Osmonds, Lou Rawls and Solomon Burke) way back in 1979. Maggie MacNeal was one half of the successful Dutch duo Mouth & MacNeal. Their biggest hit was ‘How do you do?’ that peaked at number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1972. Two years later they became third in the Eurovision Song Contest (which was won by Abba). After a quarrel Maggie MacNeal went solo in 1975.

Dutch singers (although born in South Africa) Rob and Ferdi Bolland are best known for their work with Austrian singer Falco. They wrote, produced and sang on the Billboard number one 'Rock me Amadeus' in 1986. In the 1970s they started as a folk duo, sounding like Seals & Crofts, but by the end of the decade they jumped on the disco bandwagon, as so many others at the time. Their single 'Hold on' (1978) is an interesting combination of soft rock and disco (with a Moroder-esk synthesizer and 'Staying alive'-alike vocal harmonies). The same year they produced the very nice 'Late night show' for Dutch soul band Tiffany (not to be confused with the American singer of the 1980s). After their success with Falco Bolland & Bolland disappeared from the international pop radar.

Another Dutch number one on the Billboard Hot 100 were Stars On 45 (Star Sound in the U.K.) in 1981. It was a reproduction of a bootleg medley done by producer Jaap Eggermont, the former drummer of Dutch rock band Golden Earring. Normally I'm not that much into medleys, but there are exceptions, like this one and 'The best disco in town' from Ritchie Family (1976). When Stars on 45 hit the big time soon afterwards many medleys terrorised the charts for a short period of time. Probably the worst one was 'Hooked on classics' played by Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. It still sounds dreadful today...

Just Relax With Some Soul And Jazz

Here's something to relax to after a week of hard labour: a little bit of soul, jazz and good old-fashioned pop. I believe the best album of 2009 was from God Help The Girl, a solo-project and concept from Stuart Murdoch, the singer and founder of Belle & Sebastian. I like the way Murdoch mixes, let’s say, the easy listening of Burt Bacharach with the alternative sound of Morrissey and the Smiths. It’s a very unique sound, something like folky soul or soulful folk. Belle & Sebastian have a great new album out now, called ‘Write about love’. I played their wonderful single ‘I want the world to stop’ in ‘Be gentle with my ears ’ two weeks ago. The closing track from Ella Fitzgerald is composed by the master himself, Burt Bacharach. Be Gentle With Your Ears

What’s exotica? Well, it’s some kind of tropical jazz or easy listening with exotic instruments, like flute, vibraphone and bongo’s. One of the key figures of exotica is Les Baxter who created the sound in the 1950s. He also composed ‘Sunset mood’ for Carmen Lesay and ‘Pharaoh’s curse’ for Tony Martinez, two songs that can be heard in this mix. I selected a couple of similar tracks around these exotica songs, like the one from the Avalanches (whatever happened to them?).

Some of the tropical ingredients were copied by Dr. Buzzards Original Savannah Band and more seventies disco acts (that are gathered on ‘Cocktail disco’, a compilation from Dimitri From Paris). And many lounge acts used the typical exotica sounds in the 2000s. Listen to ‘Slip into something comfortable’ from Kinobe or the album ‘Silent movie’ from Quiet Village. Enjoy!

Moon-Boots: A Cosmic Experience

The only thing I have to say about this mix is that I love big movie themes and that late seventies/early eighties space sound! So consider it a soundtrack to a non-existing sf-movie, or something like that... I'm still waiting for an assignment to compile the music for a movie officially, though! ;-) Probably the best space track ever is Starship 109 from Mistral. It’s such a good song! Mistral is a space disco project from Dutchman Robbie van Leeuwen who wrote ‘Venus’ for Shocking Blue, a number one in the US in 1970 (and for Bananarama in 1986). You can hear him play Spanish guitar on this track as well.

About a year ago I put ‘Players, pimps and pushers’ online with tracks from black action movies (the so-called ‘Blaxploitation’ soundtracks). It was originally a mix I did for Laid Back radio a few years ago. For a long time I wanted to do something similar, but with a different approach. A combination of modern funk and old school tracks. This is a tribute to my wonderful dad. He died on the 23rd of September, the day I’ll always remember, to quote the Temptations. For some people you wish that they could live forever and my father was certainly one of them. He was always there for me. I’m going to miss him, that’s for sure.

Here’s a collection of songs that my father loved to hear. Each time I played this mix for him, he said he enjoyed it. He even wanted to hear it in hospital while he had an MRI scan. The intention of the mix was to create a jazzy, peaceful, relaxing and overall hopeful sound that made my father feel comfortable. Hopefully you’ll enjoy this tribute to my dad as well. The French Way

The beautiful song ‘Balloon over Paris’ by Elske DeWall that I played in my latest podcast inspired me to make a mix about France. That’s no coincidence, because there runs some French blood in my veins as well. And I was in love with a French girl for quite some time… ;-)

One of the best tracks is ‘Made in Paris’ by Trini Lopez (known for ‘If I had a hammer’). It’s a Burt Bacharach/Hal David composition that is a little bit forgotten (everybody knows their work for Dionne Warwick, of course). It has very cheerful lyrics and the melody stays in your mind immediately. The intro sounds a bit like ‘Needles and pins’ from The Searchers. The song is probably an attempt of Bacharach and David to follow the British beat bands of the mid-sixties. Read more about the track and the movie it comes from.

A movie star we all know is Sylvia Kristel (‘Emanuelle’). She reads the poem ‘La Beauté’ from Beaudelaire. Another movie star in this mix is the very sensual Brigitte Bardot. The (French) connection between St. Tropez and The Coney Island Orchestra is the production team Rinder & Lewis (‘El Coco’). Probably the first French song I heard was ‘C’est moi’ by a guy called C. Jérôme in 1974. I still like the track and the very melancholic lyrics about a girl he still thinks about after a very long time.

C. Jérôme sadly died of cancer ten years ago. La Fiancée is a contemporary French artist. You can hear her in this brand new mix.

Here are a handful of intimate songs for intimate moments. When the mix is closing down, you can take a few dance steps with your (imaginary) lover too... In interviews Tom Moulton always sounds a little bit grumpy, but his Philly remixes are superb. So look out for his latest album called ‘Philly Re-grooved ’ on Harmless Records! I tried to copy the Tom Moulton trick and DJ Dazler will play my Guilty [of stealing from Dimitri and Tom] remix of First Choice in his Dazling Soul Show on the 25th of September. Check it out, if you can!

More Danny Krivit edits on his new album ‘Edits by Mr. K Vol 2: Music of the earth’ on Strut. DJ Dazler was a little disappointed after hearing the album and I agree with him to a certain extent. I like the jazz-funk approach of Mr. K., but the edits sound best in a mix when you go from one track to another. When I listen to them as an album, I start to lose interest after two or three tracks. The edits turn out to be quite alike.
